Understanding Loneliness: Loneliness in Herefordshire

Loneliness is a universal experience—something nearly everyone encounters at some stage in life. Yet, despite its prevalence, it often remains unspoken.
At Healthwatch Herefordshire, we recognise the importance of addressing loneliness from the community and individual perspective, which we hope to gain through our project: Understanding Loneliness.

What We're Looking to Learn

This initiative aims to understand what loneliness truly means and how it impacts individuals. We want to explore the different circumstances that contribute to loneliness, such as language barriers, cultural differences, or changes in relationships. By identifying these factors, we can gain insights into how to reach those who are feeling isolated and help them reconnect with their communities.

We are also looking into the coping strategies people use to manage loneliness and the barriers they face in overcoming it. By doing so, we can better understand what kind of support people need and what interventions might be most effective in tackling and preventing loneliness. Ultimately, we hope to provide guidance and signposting to help those struggling with loneliness find the support they need.

What We Hope to Achieve

Through this project, we aim to deepen our understanding of loneliness across different demographic groups and highlight its impact on people’s well-being. Raising awareness about loneliness and its effects will help the public recognise the role they can play in supporting those who feel isolated.

We hope to encourage and support community-led solutions, such as local groups, hubs, and regular activities, to help people connect. Strengthening community infrastructure, including mental health first aid training and social support networks, will also be a key focus. Additionally, we want to link individuals with volunteering opportunities, providing them with ways to contribute to a more connected and supportive community.

By gathering evidence and insights, we will work with partner organisations to improve interventions for loneliness. Mapping social networks and identifying gaps in support systems will help ensure that services are better equipped to meet the needs of those experiencing loneliness.
